Following a rocky launch with unfavorable reception from its critics and mediocre reception from its audience, Cats isn’t done trying to wow its audience. Launched Friday, the movie based on the musical of the same name released to theaters. That being said, it was a catastrophe and Universal is raring to send an updated version of the film to theaters as reported by THR.
The decision is a vastly uncommon thing for films already in theaters, but all in all, Cats likely won’t lose anyone if they show off an improved version. The movie’s director Tom Hooper has been open about the struggle to get it finished in time for the world premiere. According to Variety, the film was almost not complete at all.
“I finished it at 8 AM yesterday after 36 hours in a row. The premiere should be the first time people get to see it, and this is genuinely a premiere.”
Per THR’s sources, they claim the aforementioned changes won’t make any difference to the runtime of the film.
This latest Universal project is hard to say how it will go. Critics found the film to be atrocious while fans find the film to be not too bad but also not great. It’s unlikely that any update the film makes will change any of that, especially since it only changes some aesthetics.
Cats is currently going through its normal theater rounds.
