Disney chose the worst possible time to announce a new spin-off series to the live-action Aladdin. Broke by The Hollywood Reporter Friday, Disney is in the works of a new series set to have Billy Magnussen to reprise his role as Prince Anders.
Of course, the series is in the works for Disney+ and is only in the early stages, according to THR. The script is set to be done by Jordan Dunn and Michael Kvamme. Both Jonathan Eirich and Dan Lin are reprising their directing roles for the series after the success of the live-action Aladdin. Rideback’s Ryan Halprin will be taking on the role of executive producer.
On a normal day, this would be celebrated by a decent sum of Disney, but not today. It wasn’t long ago that it came out Disney’s billion-dollar film didn’t do much for Aladdin star Mena Massoud. He never got an audition since the movie debuted back in May.
It’s not surprising Disney’s are working on this live-action series as they’ve gone all-in on making live-action recreations of all its biggest classics. Earlier this year, they brought to life The Lion King in a CGI-live-action retelling. They have even gone a step further with the launch of Disney+. From day one, fans could watch a live-action telling of Lady and the Tramp.
The details are scarce on this Prince Anders-led story, likely due to it being in its early stages.
What do you think? Was Disney stupid to announce it this week? Do you think they knew what they were doing?
