Free Guy, the upcoming video game-esque movie from 20th Century Fox starring Ryan Reynolds, launched its first trailer Saturday and looks to attempt another “video game-based movie.” Not to be confused with video game movies, video game-based movies don’t always take a video game and retell it, they make it their own. Video game movies, on the other hand, seek to retell a video game with an original or same story.
Free Guy puts Reynolds in the shoes of NPC-turned-protagonist, Guy, who realizes there must be more to his existence than doing the same thing every day. In a moment of courage, he stopped a bank robber and shot him while declaring he was “just sleeping,” despite the gaping hole in the robber’s chest.
The trailer then saw him run out and look around the city with glasses that showed him the world in a bright, colorful, new techno way. He then learned his city, Free City, is simply a video game and that he is the new protagonist.
Free Guy will be hitting theaters on July 3, 2020.
