It’s always satisfying to be successful at production, especially when it falls out of your comfort zone. Todd Phillips, better known for his part in making comedies like The Hangover franchise, Due Date, Road Trip, and more, it seemed like Phillips was much more comfortable with comedy. But, now, he’s moved on and his new DC-tied film Joker is raring up to break the previous box office record for the highest-grossing R-rated movie.
The only film it has left to beat out the previous record-holder, Deadpool 2, with its $783 million worldwide gross. As of now, Joker propelled gross to $737.5 million worldwide. If all goes well, the film could even breach $900 million and solidify its place as the highest-grossing R-rated movie.
Joker, which launched earlier this month, was a huge hit with fans but left critics with concerns over the title character’s actions. Many believed it would inspire another mass shooter, but that’s yet to happen. The negative publicity given to the film probably led to a larger audience than it would have otherwise received.
Joker is in its third week of theater syndication. If you’re not a theatergoer, it’s estimated to be released to DVD January 2020.
