The sequel of the 2015 Minions flick and the prequel of Despicable Me, will no longer arrive in theaters this year. Announced earlier this week, Minions: The Rise of Gru is going to shift gears and launch in 2022, instead, giving people even more time to forget these yellow creatures even existed.
The reveal was over on Twitter where the official social media page claimed to be just as bummed as its fans but also assured them that it would be worth the wait.
Minions: The Rise of Gru was initially revealed all the way back in 2017, but not much was discussed until the flick had its name announced in mid-2019. The film was originally going to hit theaters in July 2020.
Obviously, the pandemic halted that and it was moved to the following year’s July. Now, as of Thursday, the film is set to hit theaters on July 1, 2022. While this in and of itself doesn’t seem to directly relate to the pandemic, it certainly can be seen as a factor as theaters aren’t all open and many people are opting to stay away even if they could go.
