While not all heroes wear capes, The Batman star Robert Pattinson, thinks all superheroes need “magical powers” to be superheroes. During an interview with Today, the former Twilight megastar discussed his upcoming role as Bruce Wayne in the upcoming The Batman movie. When asked about what he thought when approached for the role and whether he thought about wanting to be a superhero.

Without missing a beat, Pattinson deflected that with a mumble, almost jokingly about Batman not being a superhero. According to the video:

Willie Geist: I have to ask you about Batman. That came to you and you thought what? You want to be a superhero.

Robert Pattinson: Batman’s not a superhero. [laughs]

Willie Geist: Forgive me! [laughs] How do we classify it?

Robert Pattinson: It’s weird, I always balk at it. I’m like, ‘It doesn’t count, you need to have like magical powers to be a superhero.’

Willie Geist: I mean, he’s got a cape, so that’s a pretty good start.

Robert Pattinson: Yeah, the cape is there. I give you that one.

This wasn’t the first time his hero belief came to light. Last month, the New York Times conducted an interview about the role of Batman, he dropped the bomb that he only sees Batman as a “complicated character” and not as a superhero.

“Batman’s not a hero, though. He’s a complicated character. I don’t think I could ever play a real hero — there’s always got to be something a little bit wrong. I think it’s because one of my eyes is smaller than the other one.”

He’s not the first

Pattinson falls in line with a portion of the internet which has gone into a battle against each other on whether superpowers make the superhero or if it’s their actions. This debate doesn’t bode well for some heroes such as Hawkeye and Black Widow. Both heroes aren’t filled with radioactive spider venom or anything, they’re just skilled at what they do.

Hero or not, Pattinson is ecstatic to be a part of the Caped Crusader’s history. He even worried – and swore – the leak, which name-dropped him as Batman, would ruin his chance to play the part, but clearly that’s not the case.

Fans still have a long wait ahead of them with the movie slated for a June 25, 2021 release date.
