The Exorcist is back. In a recent piece around the upcoming series, Dead Ringers, Deadline quipped about there being a reboot planned for the classic horror franchise. Produced by Morgan Creek Entertainment, nothing else is really known or if it’s even true. The source of it comes as a little line nearing the bottom of the article, after all.
“Current Morgan Creek projects include Stay Tuned at AMC, with a planned theatrical reboot of The Exorcist in the works for 2021.”
This doesn’t mean it isn’t happening, it just means to be cautious when discussing it.
With that out of the way, how’s the internet reacting? Well, it’s pretty divided, quickly after the reveal, a fan took to Change.org to voice their displeasure by calling for the film to halt production.
Watch the original The Exorcist theatrical trailer:
The biggest argument against the film being made is just how classic it turned. The Exorcist is beloved by horror fans and to reboot is doing it a disservice considering how it remains “relevant today.”
Here is their full statement:
The Exorcist is William Friedkin’s masterpiece. It’s a Horror classic and one of the scariest movies ever made if not the scariest. The original movie was made in the seventies and is still relevant today.
The Exorcist is one of the few movies that did not age, that remained for many of us the reference inspiring many other feature films and filmmakers.
We, Horror fans, moviegoers, cinephiles, movie buffs do not want or need a remake and this petition is to stop the greedy Hollywood machine for remaking The Exorcist as we all already know that a remake will never equal the original.
Stop spending millions in remaking great movies and hire people who can create new original stories instead.
The alleged reboot is scheduled to release to theaters sometime in 2021.
