Laurence Fishburne isn’t going to jump back into the Matrix in The Matrix 4. Christened as the red pill, blue pill Morpheus, it seems like the film is going to exclude him from the story. In an interview with New York Magazine (via The Wrap), the actor dropped the ball, noting that he wasn’t invited, but he does wish them well.
“I have not been invited. Maybe that will make me write another play. I wish them well. I hope it’s great,”
Fishburne isn’t too scorn by this, though. The Matrix is far from the only role fans will know him from. He’s played a myriad of characters featured on Black-ish, Predators, John Wick 2 and 3, TMNT, and more.
Of course, the rumor mills are churning, some feel it could be a hoax to build up suspense while others point to The Matrix Online, which was the continuation of the franchise in video game form. In it, Morpheus dies, though, some believe it to be faked in-game.
Lana Wachowski is directing The Matrix 4 without her sister this time around. The script is penned by Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell from Sense8. The sequel will also bring back some fan-favorites including the likes of Keanu Reeves. It will also be adding massive names to the pot including Jonathan Groff, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Neil Patrick Harris.
The Matrix 4 was going to hit theaters next year, but they’ve pushed it to spring 2022.
