After yet another director drop, PlayStation Productions’ Uncharted is eyeing Ruben Fleischer as its new director, having previously set its sights on Travis Knight. Unfortunately, the director behind the Transformers prequel-spin-off, Bumblebee, bid the project farewell in late December 2019. The decision had to do with the film’s star Tom Holland having a conflicting schedule between Uncharted and Spider-Man.
As reported by Deadline, Fleischer is a top contender and would make sense for the role. This wouldn’t make the first Sony-tied film he’d direct as he’s just coming off of Zombieland: Double Tap, the sequel to Sony’s 2009 film Zombieland, and late 2018’s Venom.
A flick based on the game franchise has been long overdue. The public has known about Sony’s desire to make a movie based on the adventures of Nathan Drake as far back as 2008, but it always seems to fall through.
Knight ducking out makes him the sixth director to bail on the Uncharted film, that being said, both Tom Holland and Mark Whalberg are still attached to the film.
As fans grew impatient, an unauthorized fan-created Uncharted short film was released on YouTube back in 2018 starring Nathan Fillion as the iconic Nathan Drake.
